A printable Christmas busy book for toddlers ages 2 to 5, with 12 cut-and-stick Velcro activities for colors, counting, shapes and letters, plus easy setup steps.
Quick answer
A Christmas busy book for toddlers is a binder of laminated holiday pages with loose Velcro pieces that little hands match, count and sort. Our printable Merry & Bright Christmas Busy Book has 12 cut-and-stick activities for ages 2 to 5, covering colors, counting 1 to 10, shapes, letters A to J, patterns and feelings. You print it at home, laminate it, add Velcro dots, and it is ready for quiet play all December.
December is exciting for little ones. It is also long. There is waiting for Santa, waiting at the store, waiting at Grandma’s and waiting in the car. A toddler with nothing to do for five minutes can turn a calm moment into chaos.
A busy book fixes that. It is quiet, it fits in a bag, and it keeps small hands busy while they learn. Below you will find what a Christmas busy book is, what is inside ours, how to set it up in an evening, and how to use it with a 2-year-old versus a 5-year-old.

What is a busy book?
A busy book (also called a quiet book) is a set of activity pages with movable pieces. Instead of drawing or writing, your child picks up a piece and sticks it in the right spot: the red ornament on the red circle, three presents under the number 3, the square cookie on the square.
Toddlers love them because every page has a clear little job, and they can do it again and again. Parents love them because there is no mess, no screen and no batteries. Because the pieces stick on and peel off, the book resets itself in seconds.
The Christmas version simply wraps all of that in the holiday they are already excited about: trees, stockings, snowmen, reindeer and cookies.

Skills your child practices
None of this feels like “school” to a toddler. It feels like playing with stickers. But across the 12 pages, your child gets steady practice with the early skills preschool teachers look for.

| Skill | Activities | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Colors | Deck the Tree | “Red goes on red!” |
| Counting 1–10 | Count the Presents, Bake the Cookies | Touching each piece while counting out loud |
| Shapes and size | Gingerbread Shapes, Big and Small | Naming a triangle, sorting big from small |
| Letters | Letter Gifts, write-and-wipe tracing | Matching big A to little a |
| Thinking skills | Shadow Match, Patterns, Santa’s Puzzle | Spotting what comes next or what fits |
| Feelings | How Does Reindeer Feel? | “He looks sad. Why is he sad?” |
| Fine motor | Every page | Pinching, peeling and pressing small pieces |
That last row matters more than it looks. Peeling a Velcro piece off and pressing it on in the right spot builds the same finger strength children later need for holding a pencil. If you want to know what to look for at this age, our fine motor skills checklist walks through it.
How to make your Christmas busy book (step by step)

Setting up a printable busy book takes one evening. Put on a Christmas movie and do it after bedtime.
- Print. Use cardstock if you have it. It holds up better to little hands. Plain printer paper works too.
- Laminate. Run the pages through a home laminator, or slide them into clear sheet protectors. Laminate the piece pages before cutting, so the pieces are sturdy.
- Cut. Trim out the pieces, leaving a small border around each one. Rounding the corners makes them softer to handle.
- Stick and store. Add a Velcro dot to each piece and its matching spot. Put the pages in a binder and keep the loose pieces in a zip pouch clipped inside.
Supplies checklist
- Cardstock or printer paper (US Letter)
- A home laminator and pouches, or clear sheet protectors
- About 100 pairs of ¾-inch Velcro dots (hook and loop)
- A 1-inch three-ring binder
- A zip pouch for the pieces
- Scissors (a grown-up job for this project)
Tip: Put the soft “loop” side on the pages and the scratchy “hook” side on the pieces. Pieces then stick to any spot, and the pages stay soft.
How to use it with a 2-year-old vs a 5-year-old
The same book grows with your child. What changes is how much help you give.
Ages 2 to 3
- Start with one page and only a few pieces. Too many choices can overwhelm a 2-year-old.
- Do it together. Name the colors and count out loud as they stick each piece.
- Try the easiest pages first: Deck the Tree, Build a Snowman and Big and Small.
- Keep sessions short. Five happy minutes beats fifteen frustrated ones.
Ages 4 to 5
- Let them work through a page on their own, then “check” it with you.
- Use the harder pages: Twinkle Light Patterns, Letter Gifts and Santa’s Puzzle.
- Add a challenge. Mix all the pieces from two pages and ask them to sort them back.
- Older preschoolers can help cut out some of the bigger pieces. Our guide on teaching scissor skills has tips for safe cutting.
Safety note: The cut-out pieces are small. Please supervise children under 3 and any child who still puts things in their mouth, and pack the pieces away after play.
When to pull out the busy book
The secret to a busy book that keeps working is to not leave it out all the time. Keep it for special moments, and it stays exciting.
- Car rides and flights to visit family over the holidays. More ideas in our post on screen-free activities for car rides and restaurants.
- Waiting at restaurants, the doctor’s office or the Christmas Eve church service.
- Quiet time while a baby naps or while you cook the holiday dinner.
- A morning countdown activity. Unlock one new page each day in December.
- Christmas Eve box or stocking. Wrap the finished binder as a gift. It is one of our favorite non-toy Christmas gifts for kids.
A handmade gift that teaches

Frequently asked questions
What age is a Christmas busy book for?
Busy books work best for ages 2 to 5. Two-year-olds enjoy the simple matching pages with a parent’s help, while 4- and 5-year-olds can do the pattern, letter and puzzle pages on their own.
Do I need a laminator to make a busy book?
No. Clear sheet protectors work well for the activity pages. For the small pieces, laminating or printing on cardstock helps them last, but a strip of clear packing tape on each side also works.
What size Velcro dots should I use for a busy book?
¾-inch Velcro dots are a good size for toddler hands. You will need about 100 pairs for the Merry & Bright Christmas Busy Book.
How long does it take to make a printable busy book?
Most of the time goes into cutting and adding dots. Plan for one evening. Laminating the pieces before you cut makes it quicker.
Is this a physical book?
No. It is a digital PDF you download right after purchase and print at home or at a local print shop. Nothing is shipped.
Can I use it in my classroom?
Yes. The license covers personal, home and single-classroom use.
A calmer, merrier December
Toddlers do not need a pile of new toys to have a magical Christmas. A few bright pages, a handful of pieces and someone to say “you did it!” go a long way. Set up your busy book once, save it for the moments that need it most, and enjoy a little more peace this holiday season.
